Local MLA Defends LGBTQ People
A local MLA is raising her voice in support of those killed and injured during last weekend’s terrorist attack on an LGBTQ night club in Orlando, Florida.
Strathcona-Sherwood Park MLA Estefania Cortes-Vargas, a member of the LGBTQ community, released a statement on Monday in regards to the U.S. attack.
“Our caucus has continuously expressed support for an inclusive society that is a safe place to everyone,” she said.
“We need to continue to be vigilant, to continue to ensure that LGBTQ-plus people everywhere are safe, not only from violence, but from the discrimination and intolerance that lead to such tragic events.”
In December 2015, it was Cortes-Vargas who brought forward the issue of using gender-neutral terms in the Alberta Legislature, as opposed to referring to MLAs as “he” or “she.”
“It’s OK if you don’t know the right pronoun to use, but what should always be on your mind is you should be respecting people,” Cortes-Vargas said. “I’m gender fluid.”
